What we collect, and what we don’t
ThinkPattern is built to be read, not to watch you read. This policy explains the little we collect, why, and the control you keep over it.
Effective May 31, 2026
Overview
ThinkPattern is a daily news-briefing app. This policy covers the ThinkPattern app and the services that support it.
The app has no accounts and asks for no personal details. What little we collect is anonymous, used only to keep the app working and to improve it, and never linked to your real-world identity. We do not sell data, show advertising, or track you across other apps.
Information we collect
We collect only what the app needs to run reliably and to understand which features people use:
- Usage analytics — an anonymous, randomly generated identifier (not tied to your identity) and the in-app actions you take, such as opening a story, perspective, or actor, tapping a source, or refreshing. We also receive basic device and app details (device model, operating-system version, app version) and your IP address, from which an approximate region may be inferred. Handled by PostHog.
- Diagnostics — when the app crashes or hits an error, we receive the technical details (stack traces), basic device and OS information, and a trail of the anonymous actions above. Handled by Sentry.
- Push notifications — only if you turn them on. Google processes a notification token for your device in order to deliver them; because we broadcast to topics rather than to individual devices, we never store your token.
- Network logs — as with any internet service, requests for content reach our delivery network carrying your device’s IP address, which is recorded in standard server logs. Handled by Cloudflare.
We do not record your screen, capture your taps automatically, or collect anything you type.
What we don’t collect
- No account, login, name, email address, or phone number.
- No precise or GPS location.
- No access to your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone.
- No advertising identifiers, and no advertising in the app.
- No tracking of your activity across other companies’ apps or websites.
How we use information
We use the information above to:
- operate and maintain the app;
- understand, in aggregate, which content and features are useful, and improve them;
- diagnose crashes and keep the app stable and secure;
- deliver the notifications you have asked to receive.
We review analytics and diagnostics only in aggregate — how many people opened a story, not who opened it. We do not sell this information or share it for advertising.
Third-party services
A small set of providers process data on our behalf. We use only their data-collection features — no session replay, no advertising integrations, no cross-site tracking. Each maintains its own privacy policy:
- PostHog — product analytics — posthog.com/privacy
- Sentry — crash and error diagnostics — sentry.io/privacy
- Google Firebase — push-notification delivery — firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Cloudflare — content delivery and hosting — cloudflare.com/privacypolicy
Data retention
We keep this anonymous data only as long as it stays useful, within our providers’ standard periods — error reports for around 90 days (Sentry) and product-analytics events for up to seven years (PostHog). Because none of it is tied to your identity, we generally cannot connect it back to you. If these periods change, we’ll update this page.
Security & data location
All data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and our providers apply standard encryption at rest. Our analytics and diagnostics providers process and store data on servers in the United States; if you use the app from elsewhere, the limited data described here is processed there.
Your choices & rights
- Notifications — turn them on or off at any time in your device’s Settings, under Notifications → ThinkPattern.
- Stopping collection — deleting the app ends any further collection from your device.
- Questions and requests — email us at the address below. Because what we collect is anonymous, we may be unable to locate data tied specifically to you, but we’ll help however we can and respond within 30 days.
Children’s privacy
ThinkPattern is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change what we collect or who processes it, we’ll update the effective date above and surface a notice in the app on its next launch. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
