Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President, reforming amid re-election siege

Launched a $3.05bn poverty package July 16 and confirmed Shettima as 2027 running mate, while defending fuel-subsidy and FX reforms as "bitter medicine" to Deloitte — as the ADC demanded a fitness probe and Atiku urged his withdrawal from the race.

Where they stand

Bola Tinubu is running a two-track presidency: selling his economic reform package as the foundation for a $1 trillion economy by 2030, and assembling the machinery for a 2027 re-election bid his opponents want to stop before it starts.

On July 16 he launched a $3.05 billion poverty-reduction package in Abuja, spanning NG-CARES, a displacement-response fund, and a health-and-education program targeting 3,000 primary-care centers and 30 million children. The same day, VP Kashim Shettima formally confirmed to Tinubu that he has filed his name with INEC as the APC vice-presidential candidate, ending ticket-balancing speculation. The 2027 ticket is set.

Tinubu met Deloitte Africa's leadership at the State House on July 15, calling his fuel-subsidy removal, FX unification, and tax overhaul "serious foundational progress" and "bitter medicine" that is working. His government separately reported $10 billion in final investment decisions and a 400,000-bpd crude-output lift over three years. Private-sector voices at the same forums warned subsidy removal and FX volatility have raised manufacturers' costs above 40 percent and demanded dividends reach ordinary citizens.

The opposition is pressing hard. The ADC on July 17 called on the National Assembly to probe Tinubu's fitness to govern, alleging he has lost control of his presidency to unelected interests. Atiku Abubakar publicly urged Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 race, citing a phantom-agency spending scandal and accusing the government of using the NBA election as a rigging "test run." The U.S. House passed a spending bill withholding all aid to Nigeria pending certification that his government protects Christians and holds perpetrators accountable.

On the legislative front, Tinubu's State Police Bill cleared first and second House readings on July 14 after the chamber withdrew its own version to adopt the executive bill. He directed suspension of a proposed ₦50,000 exam-fee hike on July 13 under public backlash — a reversal Atiku called "reckless experiments" and Peter Obi praised as a victory. His grassroots operation is expanding: the APC diaspora wing and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners issued endorsements, Senate President Godswill Akpabio pledged a polling-unit agent network, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike concluded a 31-day, 53-project commissioning blitz tied to Tinubu's third anniversary. Tinubu is set to attend the UN General Assembly in September for the first time in two years.

On their plate

1.
Economic Reform Defense and $1tn Economy Pitch

Tinubu is defending fuel-subsidy removal, FX unification, and tax reform as "bitter medicine" delivering foundational progress toward a $1tn economy by 2030 and 7% growth. He pitched the case to Deloitte Africa's leadership on July 15, while his government reported $10bn in investment decisions and 400,000 bpd in added crude output. Private-sector leaders warn production costs are up 40%+ and reform dividends have not reached ordinary citizens.

2.
2027 Re-Election Machinery

Shettima confirmed to Tinubu on July 16 that he has filed as APC's 2027 vice-presidential candidate. Endorsements rolled in from the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the APC diaspora wing. Akpabio is pledging agents at every polling unit; Wike concluded a 31-day FCT project blitz tied to Tinubu's anniversary; the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement launched July 9 with Tompolo's backing.

3.
PFIPC Scandal and Opposition Pressure

The House froze ₦1.3bn budgeted for a phantom Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and set up a probe committee. Atiku rejected Tinubu's ICPC-ordered investigation as self-serving and demanded an independent judicial panel, alleging the impostor agency got diplomatic recognition and 300 staff. The ADC escalated on July 17 to demand a National Assembly probe of Tinubu's fitness to govern and his resignation.

4.
Legislative Agenda

Tinubu's State Police Bill 2026 passed first and second House readings on July 14, with the House withdrawing its own version to adopt the executive bill. He transmitted an Administration of Criminal Justice replacement bill and a senior secondary education amendment bill on July 8-9, while withholding assent from two others for drafting defects. He directed suspension of a proposed ₦50,000 NECO/WAEC fee hike on July 13 after public backlash.

5.
Security, Foreign Affairs, and U.S. Aid Pressure

Tinubu chaired a National Security Council meeting reviewing banditry and terrorism operations amid a military-pay dispute — soldiers' pay rose to ₦100,000 from ₦49,000 but personnel call it inadequate and accuse him of breaking a March 2026 promise. He approved repatriation of 1,490 Nigerians from South Africa. The U.S. House passed a bill withholding all Nigeria aid pending Christian-protection certification. He is set to attend the UNGA in September.
