The same day, U.S. Central Command sank several Iranian tankers near Kharg Island, and Iran answered by seizing an American underwater drone at Hormuz and firing on ten more vessels. ^[1] Fuel prices set records: Brent above $100 a barrel, diesel at $5.97 a gallon, regular gasoline at $4.22. ^[2] The pattern behind that day is seven months old. Every time the United States strikes, prices climb. Every time it pauses, they fall. In April a ceasefire reopened the Strait of Hormuz and gas dropped below $4 a gallon before Iran closed it again. ^[3] In June another ceasefire pulled prices down to $3.78. ^[4] The market has tracked diplomacy, not firepower. No strike has ever produced a price cut. The administration's own assessors have already graded the war a failure: no regime change, no destruction of Iran's long-range missiles, no end to its nuclear program, 18 Americans dead. ^[5] The political story runs on a different clock. Trump has promised oil prices will drop precipitously when the war is won. In May, asked about the cost to families, he was blunt.
