IPPR Urges UK to Make EU Reentry Medium-Term Goal

The Institute for Public Policy Research argues the UK must rejoin the European Union to maintain economic strength and security amid global instability.

The Institute for Public Policy Research published a report arguing that the United Kingdom should establish rejoining the European Union as a medium-term goal. The think-tank asserts that Britain lacks the necessary scale to maintain economic strength, security, and political influence as an outsider, particularly when facing Russian aggression, Chinese coercion, and American unreliability.

Supporting this shift, the prime minister has called for a national conversation regarding the UK's long-term relationship with the EU, including the possibility of reentry. Political figures such as Andy Burnham have also expressed a desire for closer ties to boost economic growth, with Burnham stating his hope for the UK to rejoin the bloc within his lifetime.

Public sentiment appears to be shifting according to IPPR polling, which shows 52% of voters now favor EU membership, compared to 29% who prefer to remain outside the union.
