Leaked Rosstat Data Reveals 450,000 Russian War Deaths

Hacker groups leaked Russian state statistics showing up to 450,000 deaths linked to the war in Ukraine since 2022.

Leaked records from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) indicate that between 394,000 and 450,000 Russians have died in connection with the war in Ukraine since February 2022. The data, derived from more than 11 million death certificates, was stolen during cyberattacks conducted between October 29 and November 1 by the Belarusian Cyber Partisans and the pro-Ukrainian group Silent Crow.

Silent Crow estimates the death toll at 450,100, including non-combat military deaths and unspecified causes. The Belarusian Cyber Partisans reported a lower figure of 393,881 deaths explicitly linked to military operations. The leak shows that annual deaths rose from approximately 19,000 in 2022 to over 182,000 in 2025, primarily affecting men aged 30 to 49. The figures suggest that Russia's ethnic republics suffered disproportionately, while major cities like Moscow saw fewer casualties. The data includes deaths from the 2024 incursion into the Kursk region and the Battle of Bakhmut, though it excludes soldiers missing in action and roughly 27,000 foreign fighters.

These figures align with UK Ministry of Defence estimates of over 500,000 deaths but contrast with data from Mediazona, which reported 285,881 military deaths as of November 6. The Russian government does not publish comprehensive military loss figures, and the authenticity of the Rosstat data has not been independently verified.
