Andrey Gyurov Launches Candidacy for Bulgarian Presidency

Former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov officially announced his candidacy for the Bulgarian presidency on September 1, 2026. Launching his campaign in his hometown of Gotse Delchev, Gyurov selected former Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev as his vice-presidential candidate.

Nominated by an initiative committee of citizens, the ticket has secured political backing from the Democratic Bulgaria and We Continue the Change parties. Gyurov, an economist and former deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, is positioning his campaign as an independent project centered on economic competence, institutional independence, and the creation of a modern European state.

Gyurov enters a crowded field for the October 25 election. His primary competition includes acting President Iliana Yotova, who is seeking a full mandate with support from the Bulgarian Socialist Party and Progressive Bulgaria. Other declared candidates include Radostin Vassilev, Ivan Hristanov, Georgi Dimov, Nikolay Nanev, and Alexander Tomov. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round, a runoff is scheduled for November 1.
