John Healey Appoints TUC Leader Paul Nowak to Bank of England
Chancellor John Healey appointed TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak as a non-executive director of the Bank of England to provide governance oversight.
Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey appointed Paul Nowak, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), as a non-executive director of the Bank of England. Nowak replaces Frances O'Grady in a position traditionally held by a trade union leader to ensure oversight of the central bank's strategy and governance.
The appointment follows a speech by Nowak at the TUC conference in Brighton, where he called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to increase taxes on wealthy individuals and large banks to fund public services and reduce energy bills. Nowak has committed to donating his £20,000 annual fee from the role to the Bank Workers Charity and Everton in the Community.
Healey defended the decision, stating the appointment provides deep and varied experience during a critical moment for the UK economy. However, the move drew sharp criticism from Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith and Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice, who characterized the appointment as cronyism and an endorsement of a high-tax, high-spend economic agenda.
