Taiwan Tracks Record Number of Chinese Naval Vessels

Taiwan monitors an upward trend in Chinese naval mobilization and law enforcement patrols in the Western Pacific during Beijing's peak military exercise season.

Taiwanese security officials are monitoring a surge in Chinese maritime activity across the Western Pacific. Joseph Wu, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, reported tracking a record number of over 110 People's Liberation Army Navy and coastguard vessels along the First Island Chain, characterizing the deployment as a sign of expansionism.

National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen identified four Chinese naval formations currently operating in the Western Pacific, the South Pacific, near Japan's Amami Ōshima, and off the coast of Santa Ana in the Philippines. Tsai noted that the People's Liberation Army is entering its peak annual exercise season, which typically runs from July to September.

Simultaneously, the China Coast Guard launched "law enforcement patrols" east of Taiwan. The Mainland Affairs Council and the Coast Guard Administration condemned these actions as an unlawful expansion of authority, asserting that China possesses no sovereign rights over waters surrounding Taiwan. In response, the Coast Guard Administration deployed monitoring vessels to shadow Chinese ships and vowed to use all necessary measures to expel them.

This escalation follows a June 18 incident where Taiwanese forces disrupted the operations of the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 22 near Su'ao. Additionally, China and Russia are conducting joint naval exercises off Qingdao this week, which Taiwan views as a strategic effort to counter the defense strategies of the United States and its allies.
