Google Launches 3D Immersive Navigation for Android Auto

Google is rolling out Immersive Navigation to Android Auto users in the United States, using 3D visuals and Gemini AI to improve driver situational awareness.

Google is rolling out Immersive Navigation for Google Maps on Android Auto, replacing traditional flat maps with a 3D visual interface. The feature uses Street View and satellite imagery to render buildings, trees, and landmarks as 3D structures with relative heights, including detailed representations of flyovers and off-ramps. To ensure safety, buildings become translucent if they obscure the driver's view.

Starting in July 2026, the update integrates Gemini AI models to provide more natural spoken directions and real-time traffic context for alternate route suggestions. The 3D interface aims to reduce driver stress and confusion at complex intersections, large parking areas, and unfamiliar neighborhoods. While Immersive Navigation has been available to smartphone users since March 2026, this vehicle integration focuses on enhancing real-time situational awareness.

The feature is currently available in the United States across iOS, CarPlay, Android, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in. Although some users noticed the update after installing Android Auto version 17.3, the rollout appears to be a server-side update. Google has not announced plans for a global rollout outside the U.S.
