President Joseph Boakai Seeks U.S. Investment in Washington

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai held a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in Washington, D.C., on September 16 and 17, 2026, to transition the historic relationship between Liberia and the United States into a practical development partnership. Boakai advocated for increased American private-sector participation in Liberia, focusing on energy, infrastructure, and job creation for women and youth.

In discussions with Senator Angela Alsobrooks, Boakai focused on implementing a June 2026 Memorandum of Understanding between Liberia and the State of Maryland to expand opportunities in agriculture, technology, and education. Meetings with Congressman Gregory Meeks and Congressman Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, covered democratic governance, transparency, and the rule of law. The leaders also discussed regional security in West Africa and Liberia's upcoming 2026–2027 term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Boakai is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24 before attending the Liberia Annual Diaspora Conference in Alexandria, Virginia.
