Hungary and Germany Agree to Reset Diplomatic Relations

Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met in Budapest on September 14, 2026, to reset diplomatic relations and strengthen bilateral cooperation. The two nations agreed to establish regular foreign ministry consultations, intensify cooperation between think tanks, and deepen exchanges between young diplomats.

Economic discussions centered on safeguarding energy security, improving European industrial competitiveness, and expanding ties within the automotive industry. On security and policy, both countries identified the protection of the European Union's external borders and the prevention of illegal migration as common goals. They also reaffirmed their commitment to the integration of the Western Balkans and broader EU enlargement.

This diplomatic reset serves as a precursor to a scheduled visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar to Berlin on November 9-10. The agreement follows the Government of Hungary's recent accession to the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
