Anthropic CEO Says Curing Cancer Will Restore AI Trust

Dario Amodei argues that tangible scientific breakthroughs in medicine are the only way for AI companies to overcome widespread public skepticism.

CEO of Anthropic Dario Amodei stated that the artificial intelligence industry can overcome public mistrust and skepticism by delivering tangible scientific breakthroughs, specifically by curing cancer. In a post on X, Amodei acknowledged that AI companies have not yet delivered on their promises to benefit the world and argued that public distrust reflects a broader, decades-long skepticism toward corporations.

To address this, Amodei announced that Anthropic is increasing its efforts in biological and medical research. He suggested that achieving a major medical milestone is the most effective way to prove the technology's value to society.

Other industry figures disputed this approach. Yann LeCun, former chief AI scientist at Meta, argued that open-sourcing technology is the only way to build trust. Meanwhile, OpenAI architect Angel Brodin suggested that public judgment depends more on pricing, power distribution, and opacity than on scientific breakthroughs.
