ISRO Launches NVS-03 Satellite to Restore NavIC Services

The Indian Space Research Organisation is launching the NVS-03 navigation satellite to restore the minimum operational threshold for India's regional NavIC positioning system.

The Indian Space Research Organisation is scheduled to launch the NVS-03 navigation satellite on October 30, 2026, at 11:51 PM IST. The mission, designated GSLV-F18, will utilize the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This flight marks the 20th mission for the GSLV.

NVS-03 is the third satellite in the second-generation Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) series. Its primary goal is to restore the minimum threshold of four operational satellites required for proper functionality; the system currently operates with only three. This effort follows a January 2025 fuel malfunction during the NVS-02 mission that prevented that satellite from reaching its final orbit. In response, ISRO implemented tweaked launch procedures for the GSLV-F18 mission.

The satellite features indigenous atomic clocks and supports the L1 navigation frequency in addition to existing L5 and S signals. This L1 capability allows NavIC to be integrated into consumer electronics such as smartphones and wearables. The system provides positioning, navigation, and timing services across the Indian landmass and a region extending 1,500 km beyond its geopolitical boundary, offering both a standard service for civilians and an encrypted restricted service for authorized users.
