Alaska Legislators Demand Restoration of 3,048 Purged Voters

A bipartisan group of 23 Alaska legislators sent a letter on July 29, 2026, demanding that the Alaska Division of Elections immediately restore the voter status of 3,048 Alaskans. The state moved these individuals to an inactive list based on outdated Department of Motor Vehicles data that often failed to reflect current citizenship status.

Elections Director Carol Beecher defended the removals as routine list maintenance. However, Representative Ky Holland and other signatories argued the timing of the purge, occurring just weeks before the August 18 primary, was designed to cause confusion and undermine trust in the voting rolls.

While the division maintains that voters can affirm their citizenship to be reinstated, affected citizens report complications. Some individuals have received warnings that their names may not appear at polling places in time for the upcoming primary election.
