Joshua Wong Sentenced to 10 Years for Foreign Collusion

Joshua Wong received a 10-year prison sentence for foreign collusion, marking his second conviction under Hong Kong's national security law.

A Hong Kong court sentenced pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison on Thursday for foreign collusion. This represents Wong's second conviction under the national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020. Having been imprisoned since November 2020, Wong was expected to be released in January, but he will now serve both of his sentences concurrently.

Private letters written by Wong between August and October describe his life in Stanley prison, where he teaches English to fellow inmates and studies law. In these letters, Wong expressed concern that the international community would forget Hong Kong and the "countless ordinary, unknown people in different places who have paid a price for their beliefs."

The sentencing occurs amid a broader crackdown on dissent. The Security Bureau reports more than 400 arrests under national security laws since 2020, a period that has also seen the exile of political opposition and the closure of independent newsrooms.
