Conservative MPs Demand Protection for Scottish Energy Pipelines
Conservative MPs urged the UK government to grant critical national infrastructure status to Scottish offshore energy assets following reports of Russian vessels near gas pipelines.
Conservative MPs have called on the UK government to grant critical national infrastructure status to Scotland's offshore energy assets. The demand follows reports of Russian vessels lingering near the FLAGS and Frigg UK pipelines, which deliver gas to the St Fergus terminal in Aberdeenshire.
Harriet Cross, the shadow Scottish Secretary, and fellow shadow secretaries James Cartlidge and Andrew Bowie warned in a letter to the government that disruption to these pipelines would have catastrophic consequences for millions of households and businesses. The MPs specifically cited threats from Russia and China, arguing that the presence of these vessels in British waters proves the UK cannot afford complacency regarding national security.
Beyond infrastructure protections, the Conservatives criticized the Labour government's recent Budget for failing to commit 3% of GDP to defense spending. They further accused the Labour and SNP governments of undermining domestic energy security by banning new oil and gas licenses and refusing to support the Rosebank project, which they claim puts thousands of skilled jobs and billions in investment at risk.
