IBM Consulting Launches Forward Deployed Units to Scale Enterprise AI

IBM Consulting launched Forward Deployed Units (FDUs), a new AI delivery model designed to move enterprise AI from experimentation to production at scale. The announcement, authored by Senior Vice President and Head of IBM Consulting Mohammad Ali Fardin, positions FDUs as a departure from traditional labor-heavy consulting delivery.

Each FDU consists of a small, senior pod of approximately six people, including business domain specialists, architects, and engineers. These human teams are supported by a digital workforce of specialized AI agents, creating an integrated system that combines strategy, engineering, and business context into a single system of continuous execution. The model directly targets the persistent gap between enterprise AI pilot projects and full-scale production deployment.

FDUs operate on the IBM Consulting Advantage platform, which provides consistency and governance across engagements. IBM is deploying these units globally across the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Current clients already working with the FDU model include Riyadh Air, Nestlé, Heineken, and Pearson, spanning aviation, consumer goods, beverages, and education.

The launch signals IBM Consulting's strategic bet that AI delivery requires smaller, more senior teams augmented by AI agents rather than the large human workforces that have traditionally defined technology consulting engagements.
