Spain September Inflation Rises to 4.9 Percent
Spain confirmed its September consumer price index rose to 4.9 percent, driven by energy price surges and increasing core inflation.
Spain confirmed its final consumer price index for September at 4.9 percent, an increase from 4.3 percent in August. The harmonised index of consumer prices rose to 5.0 percent, the highest level recorded since February 2023.
Energy price surges linked to conflict in the Middle East drove the headline figures. Additionally, core annual inflation climbed to 3.1 percent from 2.9 percent, marking its highest level since March 2024. This rise indicates that initial price shocks are filtering into broader goods and services.
The European Central Bank faces a more complicated path toward its 2 percent inflation target due to these trends. While this single report is unlikely to trigger an immediate policy change, it strengthens the case for the bank to remain cautious following two interest rate hikes earlier this summer.
