OpenAI Bans Russian Accounts Used in Influence Campaign

OpenAI banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia after discovering they were used to conduct a covert online influence campaign. The operation utilized AI-generated content across X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Telegram, and Substack to spread misinformation and promote the International Burke Institute, a website that featured misattributed and copied academic work.

As part of the effort to manufacture authority, the operators developed a sovereignty index designed to praise Russia while denigrating Western nations. To evade detection, the users employed VPNs to bypass regional restrictions and specifically prompted the AI to remove linguistic markers that would reveal their Russian origins.

OpenAI reported that while the immediate audience reach of the campaign was limited, the operation demonstrated how influence actors use AI as a supporting tool to obscure the sources of favored narratives and establish scalable assets. The company noted that the use of AI in this manner can ultimately lead to the broader operation being exposed.
