UnitedHealth Group Sells WellMed Interest to Restore Margins
UnitedHealth Group Inc. sold an ownership interest in Florida WellMed clinics to TPG as part of a strategy to manage rising medical expenses.
UnitedHealth Group Inc. is implementing a portfolio consolidation strategy to manage rising medical expenses and restore profitability margins. As part of this restructuring, the company sold an ownership interest in several Florida WellMed clinics to the private equity firm TPG, though it maintains a continuing interest in the clinics' operations.
The move is designed to support Optum Health, with management targeting margin recoveries of 2%, 4%, and 6% for the years 2026 through 2028. This turnaround effort follows a period of flat revenue growth and compressed margins that caused the company's stock to underperform the S&P 500 over the last 52 weeks.
Despite these challenges, the company reported strong operating cash flows of $27 billion over the trailing twelve months. The sale of the WellMed interest represents a broader effort to streamline non-core assets and stabilize the company's financial trajectory.
