Jairam Ramesh Criticizes Amit Shah Over NEET Protester Police Action

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 9 for refusing to issue a statement in Parliament concerning the Delhi Police's actions against NEET-UG protesters. Ramesh alleged that Shah has a pattern of remaining silent during crises to avoid accountability.

To support this claim, Ramesh cited a December 2023 security breach involving smoke canisters in the Lok Sabha. He argued that this silence coincided with the suspension of 146 MPs, which enabled the government to pass the Chief Election Commissioner Bill and the Three Criminal Law Reform Bills with minimal opposition. Ramesh stated that "history should not repeat itself."

The current monsoon session of Parliament, which runs from July 20 to August 13, has experienced daily adjournments as opposition members continue to demand a formal statement from the Home Minister regarding the police conduct.
