INEC Conducts Four Legislative Bye-Elections as 2027 Dress Rehearsal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted four legislative bye-elections on September 19, 2026, across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states. These polls served as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 General Election, allowing the commission to audit its logistics framework and stress-test technological deployments from its National Situation Room in Abuja.

In Gombe State, the election for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency sought to fill a House of Representatives seat vacated by the death of Yaya Bauchi Tongo on June 12, 2026. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya cast his ballot in the Jekadafari Ward and praised the high voter turnout across 903 polling units. Other political leaders, including APC candidate Usman Kallamu and governorship candidate Jamilu Gwamna, reported a lack of hitches and expressed confidence in the process.

Other contests included the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, the Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and the Udu State Constituency in Delta. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan stated that the commission resolved administrative challenges before the polls and will use the operational lessons from these exercises to refine the roadmap for the 2027 general elections.
