Armenia Launches Energy Reform Plan to Boost Regional Connectivity
The Government of Armenia is diversifying its energy sources and expanding regional power grids through its Crossroads of Peace initiative to ensure long-term energy security.
The Government of Armenia is implementing a comprehensive energy sector reform plan designed to secure national energy independence and integrate the country into regional markets. Central to this strategy is the Crossroads of Peace initiative, which seeks to diversify energy sources by expanding nuclear, gas, hydroelectric, and renewable capacities. The government has set a target of 2,000 MW of solar and wind power by 2040.
Infrastructure priorities include the modernization of internal grids and the extension of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant's second unit for the period of 2026–2036. The plan also calls for the launch of a new nuclear power unit to increase total capacity.
To enhance regional connectivity, Armenia plans to commission the Iran-Armenia 400 kV transmission line and begin construction on a 400 kV line connecting to Georgia. Additionally, the government intends to initiate diplomatic dialogue with Turkey and Azerbaijan to establish new regional energy links.
