President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella Announces Massive Colombian Diplomatic Overhaul

Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced a sweeping reversal of the foreign policy established by outgoing President Gustavo Petro. Scheduled to be sworn in on August 7 in Cali, De la Espriella will close 14 embassies and approximately 15 consulates. He will completely sever diplomatic ties with Cuba and Nicaragua, which he characterized as tyrannies, while closing missions in countries such as Algeria, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, Ghana, and South Africa without breaking formal relations.

As part of a shift toward traditional alignment with Israel and the United States, De la Espriella will halt plans to open an embassy to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and instead relocate the Colombian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This move follows a meeting in Washington between designated Foreign Minister Omar Bola Escobar and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to coordinate the restoration of full diplomatic relations and security cooperation.

To optimize costs, the new administration will merge diplomatic missions in Paris and Rome and establish a new mission in Nigeria. De la Espriella framed the reorganization as a move toward efficiency and austerity, stating that savings from the bureaucracy will be redirected toward security, health, education, and infrastructure.
