Missouri DOT to Close I-70 in Kansas City for 11 Months
The Missouri Department of Transportation will close a section of Interstate 70 in Kansas City for 11 months starting in January 2027.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will close a major section of Interstate 70 in Kansas City for 11 months to facilitate the Improve I-70 Project. The closure will span the area between Prospect Avenue and Van Brunt Boulevard, beginning in January 2027 and lasting through December 2027.
This specific closure is part of a larger construction effort that started in the spring of 2025 and is expected to continue until the spring of 2028. The agency stated that the long-term shutdown is necessary to allow for critical improvements to the highway infrastructure.
Officials are advising travelers to plan alternate routes. The agency noted that the closure may coincide with Kansas City Chiefs playoff games and could impact access to the stadiums used by both the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
