Ghana and South Africa Clash Over Ghanaian National's Death

The Government of Ghana and South Africa are in a diplomatic dispute over whether the killing of a Ghanaian national was a xenophobic attack or a criminal act.

The Government of Ghana and South African authorities are locked in a diplomatic dispute following the death of Bashiru Isak, a Ghanaian national. Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the killing as a senseless act of violence linked to a rising tide of xenophobia and anti-immigrant protests in Cape Town's Khayelitsha suburb. In response, Ghana has filed a formal protest, petitioned the African Union Commission, and evacuated over 900 citizens through a voluntary repatriation program.

South African officials have rejected these claims, asserting they are factually incorrect. The South African Police Service stated they have no record of a murder in Khayelitsha and described the accounts as a fabricated tale. Instead, South African authorities argue that a Ghanaian national, Kwabena Boagen, was killed in a separate incident at a barbershop in Nyanga township on June 29, which they attribute to extortion-linked crime rather than political unrest.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi accused Ghanaian authorities of communicating false information that could inflame tensions. While the South African government expressed regret for the loss of life, it maintained that the narratives of xenophobic violence are unacceptable. The South African Police Service has requested that Ghanaian authorities provide specific details regarding the alleged Khayelitsha incident to allow for further investigation.
