Spiritual Seekers Turn to AI Chatbots for Guidance

Spiritual seekers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence chatbots for existential guidance, favoring the accessibility and non-judgmental nature of AI over traditional human gurus. This trend is most prominent in Hinduism, where Vikas Sahu founded GitaGPT, a platform using avatars of Lord Krishna and large language models trained on the Bhagavad Gita to provide spiritual advice.

In response to this shift, established spiritual leaders have integrated technology into their practices. Jaggi Vasudev, known as Sadhguru, launched the Miracle of the Mind app and a 3D interactive hologram developed by Proto Hologram. Similarly, Deepak Chopra introduced the Digital Deepak platform, which bases its AI responses on his personal talks and writings. Other initiatives include the Innerverse 360 nonprofit by Hue Learn and an online teaching portal from the Self-Realization Fellowship designed to distribute the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Despite the convenience, theologians and critics argue that AI lacks the lived experience, ethical accountability, and physical presence required for true spiritual awakening. While some organizations are implementing guardrails to prevent AI hallucinations, critics warn that chatbots may act as cheerleaders rather than challenging teachers, lacking the essential soul-to-soul connection between a guru and a disciple.
