Spotorno Mayor Orders Public Tender for Nun-Run Beach
Mayor Mattia Fiorini announced a public tender for a portion of a beach club managed by nuns to comply with European Union regulations.
The municipality of Spotorno plans to put a 50-metre stretch of the Bagni Gino Garrone beach club up for public bidding this autumn. Mayor Mattia Fiorini stated the concession will be reclassified as a free equipped beach to comply with regional regulations and the European Union's Bolkestein directive, which mandates that private beach concessions be opened to public tender by June 30, 2027.
Nuns from the Suore di Carità di Santa Maria order, who have managed the resort since 1946, oppose the move. They argue that transitioning to a free-access model will reduce profitability and jeopardize the funding for their local infant school and summer camp. Despite these concerns, the mayor maintains that the order must participate in the tender process like any other applicant.
