Peter Obi Urges INEC to Extend Voter Registration Window

Presidential candidate Peter Obi requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) extend the window for Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in preparation for the 2027 general elections. In a statement shared on X, Obi argued that the extension is critical to ensure young Nigerians reaching the age of 18 are not disenfranchised from the democratic process.

Obi supported his request by citing a November 22, 2022, Federal High Court judgment in Anaja Salmat & 3 Others v. INEC. That ruling established that voter registration should remain open until 90 days before a general election to protect constitutional voting rights.

While acknowledging that INEC requires sufficient time to clean the register and finalize logistical arrangements, Obi maintained that maximizing citizen participation is essential for a strengthened democracy. He urged the commission to adopt a timeline that balances the integrity of the process with the inclusion of all eligible voters.
