Birmingham Airport Announces £2bn Expansion to Reach 30 Million Passengers

Birmingham Airport plans a £2bn expansion to more than double its annual passenger capacity to 30 million over the next 15 years.

The Birmingham Airport Authority has unveiled a £2bn expansion plan to increase its annual passenger capacity from 13 million to 30 million over the next 15 years. The proposal focuses on upgrading terminal infrastructure, baggage systems, passenger facilities, and aircraft stands, with initial development potentially starting in 2027.

Airport officials estimate the project will generate over 50,000 jobs, including 3,800 direct on-site positions. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker praised the initiative as a significant boost for the region's international links and local businesses.

Chief Executive Nick Barton noted that the proposed investment is unprecedented for the site, though he cautioned that the plans depend on a more stable and favorable taxation and regulatory environment to counter rising wage and energy costs. A public consultation process begins on 16 October in Hampton on Arden to allow local residents and business owners to provide feedback on the expansion.
