UN Envoy Mediates Yemen Talks After Houthi Capture Mokha
UN envoy Hans Grundberg held emergency talks in Oman and Saudi Arabia to stop an unprecedented escalation of violence in Yemen.
United Nations envoy Hans Grundberg conducted urgent diplomatic missions to Muscat and Riyadh to prevent further escalation in Yemen. The push for mediation follows a surge of violence in September that ended a 2022 ceasefire, characterized by Iran-backed Houthi rebels capturing the strategic city of Mokha and several Red Sea islands.
This offensive extended Houthi control to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, creating a direct threat to commercial shipping and global trade corridors. The renewed fighting has resulted in at least 838 deaths and over 3,640 injuries. Displacement has reached critical levels, with more than 145,000 people displaced within Yemen and 3,000 refugees fleeing to Djibouti.
Grundberg described the current escalation as unprecedented and dramatic, noting that the Yemeni conflict is increasingly linked to broader Middle East wars involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. He recommended that the warring parties disentangle the Yemen war from these regional conflicts to reach a settlement defined by Yemenis.
