President Nicusor Dan Nominates Luca Niculescu as Prime Minister
President Nicusor Dan nominated diplomat Luca Niculescu as prime minister to end a five-month political crisis and build a parliamentary majority in Romania.
President Nicusor Dan nominated diplomat Luca Niculescu as Romania's prime minister on October 5, 2026. Niculescu, a former ambassador to France and current State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the fourth nominee in five months following the May 5 dismissal of the Ilie Bolojan government via a no-confidence motion. The nomination follows the recent parliamentary rejection of a cabinet proposed by the previous nominee, Siegfried Muresan.
Niculescu has 10 days to propose a cabinet and seek a vote of confidence. He stated his primary objective is to build a parliamentary majority and ensure economic predictability, noting he intends to use data-driven reforms from Romania's OECD accession process as a foundation for his program. He expressed openness to discussions with political parties to create a consensus-based government, whether political or technocratic.
Social Democratic Party Chairman Sorin Grindeanu criticized the appointment, claiming the nomination disregards the party that won the elections and defies parliamentary mathematics. Grindeanu suggested that early elections may be the only solution if Niculescu continues the austerity policies of the Bolojan administration. The political deadlock persists amid economic pressure to pass a 2027 budget and regional security concerns regarding Russian-linked drone incursions near the Romanian border.
