DWP Reports 43% Success Rate for PIP Benefit Claims

The Department for Work and Pensions reported that only 43% of new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims submitted under normal rules were awarded between February 2021 and January 2026. The agency determines eligibility through a points system based on how a health condition affects daily living and mobility, rather than relying solely on a medical diagnosis.

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate they can perform specific tasks safely, repeatedly, timeously, and reliably. The PIP Guide warns that many claimants fail to secure benefits—which can reach £778 per month for those receiving enhanced rates for both daily living and mobility—because they understate their difficulties or describe their condition based on their better days.

In contrast, 99% of claims made under the Special Rules for End of Life (SREL) were successful during the same period. These rules provide a streamlined process and waive certain criteria for individuals with a terminal prognosis of 12 months or less. Individuals struggling with the application process are encouraged to seek support from Citizens Advice or local disability support groups.
