Nathan Johnson Vows to Probe Deloitte Over Texas Voter Error
Texas State Senator Nathan Johnson plans to investigate state vendor contracts after a software error left up to 200,000 voter registrations unprocessed.
Texas State Senator and Democratic attorney general candidate Nathan Johnson announced plans to investigate Deloitte and other state vendor contracts if elected. The proposal follows the discovery in September 2026 of a software error on Department of Public Safety servers that left between 178,000 and 200,000 voter registration applications unprocessed.
The failure occurred in 2025 and was allegedly caused by a Deloitte update. The error came to light shortly before the October 5 registration deadline for the November 3 midterm elections. Johnson argues the incident demonstrates the risks of outsourcing core state functions to private contractors.
Republican State Senator Paul Bettencourt also criticized the failure, attributing it to unintended consequences of an IT upgrade by Deloitte and a failure by the Texas Secretary of State to detect the lack of registrations. In response, the Texas Secretary of State's office is providing grant funding to counties to help process the delayed registrations before the election deadline.
