INEC Warns AI Disinformation and Funding Gaps Threaten 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warned that generative AI and funding delays pose significant threats to the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the 13th Annual International Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria in Abuja, Chairman Joash Amupitan disclosed that the commission is still awaiting the full release of funds required for operations and the replacement of damaged accreditation devices.

Amupitan emphasized that generative AI has lowered the cost of producing convincing fake audio and video, which could erode voter trust and undermine result credibility. To counter these risks, INEC is developing a five-part response strategy focused on expanding media literacy and building rapid-response capacities.

To address public distrust following technological failures during the 2023 elections, the commission is conducting a comprehensive audit of its infrastructure. INEC is also considering a mock presidential election to stress-test its accreditation and result transmission systems. While tools like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) are intended to ensure transparency, the commission noted that their effectiveness depends on both technical reliability and voter understanding.
