Analysts Weigh Ethereum Investment Potential Amid Network Volatility
Financial analysts evaluate Ethereum as a foundational asset despite leadership instability, cybersecurity losses, and a price drop of 47% from its August 2025 peak.
Financial analysts are debating the long-term investment viability of Ethereum, which currently trades around $2,500, a 47% decline from its all-time high in August 2025. Proponents argue the asset remains foundational due to its dominance in stablecoins and decentralized finance, where it holds between $51.4 billion and $54.1 billion in DeFi deposits and over $147 billion in stablecoins.
The network faces several structural challenges. Cybersecurity risks led to $332 million in hack losses during the first half of 2026, and the supply has shifted to a slightly inflationary rate of roughly 0.9% per year. Leadership instability also persists following the departure of the Ethereum Foundation's co-executive directors in June 2026. Additionally, co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated in February 2026 that the original vision for promoting layer 2s no longer made sense.
Given these risks and the low probability of repeating early exponential gains, some analysts suggest limiting Ethereum's portfolio allocation to 5%. This aligns with broader institutional guidance, such as BlackRock's suggestion of a 2% crypto allocation and Morgan Stanley's October 2025 recommendation of up to 4% for aggressive portfolios.
