Martin Lewis Campaigns Against HMRC Lifetime ISA Fines

Financial expert Martin Lewis is campaigning against HM Revenue and Customs for issuing penalties to 154,100 people who made unauthorized withdrawals from their Lifetime ISAs between April 2025 and March 2026. The fines total approximately 119 million pounds in losses for savers.

Penalties are triggered when funds are withdrawn for purposes other than buying a first home valued under 450,000 pounds. Lewis argues the 6.25% charge is unfair because the property price cap has remained stagnant since 2017 while inflation has pushed many young buyers above that threshold. He noted that using savings for a home above the limit effectively fines savers 6.25% of their money.

In response to these issues, the Government of the United Kingdom announced plans in June to replace LISAs with a First-Time Buyer ISA. This new product intends to remove the 6.25% penalty, although campaigners continue to push for a higher property value threshold for the replacement account.
