King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV Dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of the Tooro Kingdom died Thursday while receiving medical treatment in the United States.

The Tooro Kingdom of western Uganda announced that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34. Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed the monarch passed away while receiving medical treatment in the United States. While official statements did not specify a cause of death, sources close to the royal family indicated he was being treated for cancer.

Ascending the throne in 1995 at age three following his father's death, King Oyo was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch. During his three-decade reign, he focused on healthcare, youth empowerment, and environmental conservation, and served as a UNAIDS Champion for HIV and AIDS. Although traditional kingdoms in Uganda hold no formal political power under the republic, they maintain significant cultural and social influence.

Prime Minister Akiiki confirmed that the continuity of the crown is assured through a designated prince as heir, whose identity will be revealed according to kingdom traditions. The Tooro Kingdom has formally notified President Yoweri Museveni, who served as one of the king's guardians during his minority, of the passing. Tributes have poured in from government officials and other traditional institutions, including Buganda, with some proposing the planting of one million trees in the king's honor.
