Google LLC Settles California Lawsuit Over YouTube TV Renewals

Google LLC agreed to a $7.5 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging its YouTube service violated California's automatic renewal law. The lawsuit claimed YouTube failed to provide required disclosures before automatically renewing YouTube TV subscriptions.

Eligible claimants are California residents who paid for at least one renewal term for a subscription bought directly from YouTube between February 1, 2017, and October 29, 2021. Those who subscribed via the Apple App Store are excluded. Eligible users are estimated to receive a payout of $92.26, provided they submit a claim with their account details and settlement notice PIN by August 30.

The legal action coincides with the implementation of California's Click-to-Cancel law. This legislation requires companies to obtain express affirmative consent for renewals and ensure cancellation methods are transparent.
