Florida Insurance Rates Decline Following Major Tort Reforms

Home and auto insurance premiums are declining for many policyholders in Florida following the implementation of major tort reforms. The Government of Florida enacted these legislative changes to stabilize the insurance market by banning the assignment of benefits for roofs. This specific practice previously allowed contractors to deal directly with insurers, which often triggered high-cost claims and expensive, prolonged legal battles.

Diana Giron, owner of Universal Insurance Agency in Orlando, reported a significant difference in rates over the last three to four months. She noted that a reduction in lawsuits and the entry of new companies into the state market have contributed to the current downward trend in premiums. Giron recalled a time when the state was receiving over 380 claims a day, contrasting that period with the current improvement.

Auto insurance rates are also decreasing due to reforms specifically targeting auto glass coverage. These changes aim to reduce the frequency and cost of claims related to windshields and glass repair. Because of the shifting landscape, insurance experts are currently advising consumers to shop for new policies or request that their agents do so, as some carriers are offering rates lower than those listed on original renewal notices.

These reforms represent a broader effort to restore competitiveness to the Florida insurance market. By curbing the incentives for litigation and reducing the overhead associated with fraudulent or inflated claims, the state has created an environment more attractive to national carriers, which in turn drives down costs for individual consumers.
