Nigeria and Türkiye Seek Strategic Defence Industrial Partnership

Nigeria and Türkiye held the 7th Nigeria–Türkiye Defence Industry Business Forum in Abuja on Wednesday to shift their bilateral relationship from a buyer-seller dynamic toward a strategic industrial partnership. The forum focused on establishing Nigeria as a competitive defence manufacturing hub in Africa through joint production, technology transfer, and local manufacturing.

General Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Minister of Defence, emphasized the need for a balanced partnership founded on research and development, maintenance, and skills development. He argued that success should be measured by the extent to which Nigerian institutions acquire the capabilities to sustain and develop their own systems. The partnership intends to prioritize artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, and unmanned systems, drawing on Türkiye's history of achieving defence self-reliance.

Turkish delegation representative Gokman Ucar stated the forum would review the strategic partnership through the lens of defence industrialization, utilizing business-to-business meetings to examine Nigeria's regulatory and investment frameworks. Nigerian officials cited the DICON Act 2023 as the primary legal framework enabling private-sector investment and strategic co-development in the sector.
