India Rushes Energy Infrastructure for AI Data Center Surge
India is accelerating energy infrastructure development to support AI data center capacity projected to surge from 1.5 GW to 13.5 GW by 2031-32.
India is racing to overhaul its energy infrastructure to keep pace with a projected explosion in AI and data center capacity, which is expected to jump from 1.5 gigawatts in 2025 to 13.5 gigawatts by 2031-32. AI-linked data centers alone could demand an additional 40 to 45 terawatt-hours of electricity by 2030, straining power grids across major digital hubs including Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Noida.
The government has responded with a multi-pronged strategy. It is implementing the IndiaAI Mission, backed by a ₹10,371.92 crore allocation, and proposing the National Electricity Policy 2026 to modernize transmission networks. On the generation side, planners are integrating solar and wind hybrid systems paired with battery storage, while pushing nuclear power capacity toward 100 gigawatts by 2047 under the SHANTI Act 2025. Tamil Nadu has emerged as an early model, demonstrating how industrial corridors with pre-built substations and streamlined approvals can accelerate data center deployment.
Infrastructure developers are also adopting liquid cooling and Zero Liquid Discharge systems to curb the high energy and water consumption these facilities demand. The convergence of energy and digital infrastructure planning reflects the scale of the challenge: without coordinated upgrades, grid bottlenecks could constrain India's ambitions to become a global AI hub.
