Abu Dhabi Targets 1.4 Million Tonnes of Hydrogen by 2031

The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry released a June 2026 report positioning the emirate as a strategic leader in the global hydrogen economy. By leveraging its industrial infrastructure and solar resources, Abu Dhabi aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031 and establish itself as one of the world's lowest-cost producers of hydrogen and ammonia by 2030.

The strategy focuses on the production of commercially viable hydrogen derivatives, such as methanol, green ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuel, intended for export to the European Union, South Korea, and Japan. This shift supports the region's broader economic diversification and emissions reduction goals.

Operational progress includes the Emsteel–Masdar green steel pilot, marking the first hydrogen-based steel project in the Middle East and North Africa. Additionally, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has partnered with Strata Manufacturing and John Cockerill Hydrogen to manufacture electrolysers locally to support the expanding infrastructure.
