Amazon Cuts Retail Jobs Amid Record AI Infrastructure Spending
Amazon eliminated nearly 1,000 roles in its Stores business while preparing to spend $220 billion on AI infrastructure and data centers.
Amazon.com Inc. eliminated fewer than 1,000 roles on October 6, 2026, primarily within its Stores business. The job cuts affected employees in customer service, marketplace support, and retail engineering across several units, including operations in the United Kingdom and India.
A company spokesperson stated that the organization adjusted its team structures to better deliver on priorities and innovate for customers. These reductions follow a larger overhaul that saw approximately 30,000 jobs eliminated late last year and early this year.
The retail cuts occur as the company prepares to spend a record $220 billion on AI infrastructure, including chips and data centers. Simultaneously, Amazon has contacted some former employees regarding open positions within Amazon Web Services and its AI businesses.
