Indian Consumer Durables See Strong Growth During Dhanteras

Indian consumers drove significant value growth in premium electronics and jewelry during Dhanteras shopping, with leading appliance firms reporting revenue increases up to 50 percent.

Consumers across India engaged in significant shopping on Friday for Dhanteras, marking the start of the five-day Diwali celebrations. While local markets in Shimla saw a rush for gold, silver, and traditional jewelry due to falling precious metal prices and the wedding season, utensil traders in the city reported lower footfall than the previous year.

Nationally, the consumer durables sector experienced strong momentum, with industry-wide value growth estimated between 20 and 25 percent. Godrej Enterprises Group led the surge with value growth exceeding 50 percent. Blue Star recorded revenue growth of more than 40 percent during the week, and Haier Appliances India reported value growth of 25 to 30 percent.

Industry leaders attributed this growth to a shift toward premium, high-capacity products, including large-screen televisions and side-by-side refrigerators. In contrast, mass-market and entry-level electronics showed slower traction during the festive period.
