Malaysia and Iran Seek to Formalize Defense Cooperation

Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Iran's Acting Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, Majid Ebnolreza, held discussions on August 10 and 11, 2026, to expand bilateral military and defense cooperation. The two officials focused on finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a formal framework for ties, specifically targeting technology transfer, mutual dialogue, and training.

During the exchanges, Ebnolreza offered to share Iran's indigenous defense and technological experience with Malaysia. He emphasized the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca for maritime security and argued that regional instability is driven by the "Zionist regime" rather than a lack of foreign military bases.

Khaled Nordin praised Iran's resilience and defense capabilities amid its conflicts with the United States and Israel. He also expressed gratitude for Iran's assistance in ensuring the safe passage of Malaysian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. To further these ties, Malaysia invited Iran to participate in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) next year to exchange experience and explore substantive cooperation.
