Ukraine Adopts Layered Defense Using Recycled Fishing Nets

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has implemented a layered defense strategy to counter escalating waves of Russian drones and missiles. This approach emphasizes a dense network of inexpensive short-range systems and modified gunship interceptors to preserve high-end assets such as Patriot systems. To reduce missile costs, F-16 and Mirage 2000-5 jets are utilizing cannons and rockets, although this has caused unsustainable airframe fatigue.

To increase tactical flexibility, Ukrainian commanders have decentralized authority, allowing pilots to pivot to priority targets without centralized approval. This military shift is being supplemented by grassroots efforts to snare exploding drones. Ground Squirrel Ventures and Net Your Problem have shipped multiple containers of recycled fishing nets from the United States to Kyiv, where they are deployed across trenches, roadways, and buildings.

Analysis from the Royal United Services Institute indicates these mobile air defense teams are evolving to meet the nature of modern air warfare. Nicole Baker, who managed the logistics of the net shipments from Massachusetts and Oregon, expressed a desire that such measures were not necessary while remaining committed to the contribution.
