Delhi High Court Dismisses NIA Probe Plea Into CJP Protests

The Delhi High Court permitted petitioner Satish Kumar Agarwal to withdraw a Public Interest Litigation that requested a National Investigation Agency probe into July 20 protests organized by the Cockroach Janata Party. The petition alleged that the student-led agitation resulted in the vandalism of public property, attacks on police, and the closure of metro stations.

Representing Agarwal, advocate Barun Sinha claimed that the city of New Delhi was held hostage for several days by an unruly mob. Sinha further alleged an international connection to the movement, suggesting the protests were designed to destabilize the central government and force the Prime Minister of India to resign.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia ruled that the selection of an investigating agency is a government prerogative rather than a judicial decision. However, the court granted the petitioner liberty to submit a representation to the relevant authorities regarding the damage to public properties.
