Apple Launches First Touchscreen MacBook Pro with OLED Display

Apple unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro featuring a PROLED XDR OLED display and M5 chips during its Pro and Tell event in Los Angeles.

During its Pro and Tell event on October 28 in Los Angeles, Apple Inc. unveiled the first touchscreen MacBook Pro, marking a reversal of a long-standing company policy against touch-enabled laptops. The new 14-inch and 16-inch models feature a PROLED XDR tandem OLED display with 2,000 nits peak brightness and a Dynamic Island interface that replaces the traditional screen notch. The laptops also bring back the glowing Apple logo on the lid and feature a thinner, lighter chassis.

Introduced by CEO John Ternus, the touchscreen models utilize M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, supporting up to 128GB of RAM and 16TB of storage. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, reflecting a $400 premium over non-touch versions. To support the new hardware, macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces touch-optimized menus and a redesigned Dock. This pivot follows years of resistance from former leadership, including Steve Jobs, who previously described such devices as "ergonomically terrible."

Parallel to the touchscreen launch, Apple released an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac powered by the new M6 chip. These M6 models offer up to 30% faster graphics and 25% faster AI performance than the M5 generation. Additionally, the company launched an OLED iPad mini with a landscape-oriented camera. Pre-orders for the new Mac and iPad hardware began October 28, with general retail availability scheduled for November 6.
