Nigel Farage Recruits Former Labour Officials for London Push

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced the defection of veteran Labour Party politicians Sir Robin Wales and Clive Furness during a press conference in London on Wednesday. The move is part of a strategic effort to increase the party's influence in the capital before the May local elections. Farage stated that recruiting individuals who have managed budgets and run government represents a significant step forward for the party's capabilities.

Sir Robin Wales, the former mayor of Newham who was deselected by Labour in 2018, has been appointed as Reform's London director of local government. Clive Furness, a former council leader and councillor in Newham, joined as a senior adviser and will run as the Reform UK candidate for mayor of Newham. Both men criticized the administration of Mayor Sadiq Khan and the Labour government, with Wales claiming the party had lost its "moral compass" regarding housing, the NHS, and illegal migration.

In response, the Labour Party dismissed the appointments as "scraping the barrel," asserting that neither man had been part of the party movement for some time. A London Labour spokesperson further criticized Reform UK for attacking the city's multiculturalism. Wales defended the party against accusations of racism, challenging critics to provide evidence. Farage indicated that additional defections from Labour are expected in the coming weeks and months.
